Rockstar Games issues statement regarding Grand Theft Auto V mods controversy

Maybe not the end of single player mods.

Rockstar Games issues statement regarding Grand Theft Auto V mods

Yesterday, the lead developer for the main modding tool used for Grand Theft Auto V, OpenIV, was officially shut down after the developers received a Cease and Desist from Rockstar Games' parent company, Take-Two Interactive.

Although Rockstar Games has been an avid supporter of modding in the past and has even showcased mods on their website, Take-Two stepped in and declared modding for the open world crime game "illegal". Ironic, we know. This means there will be no more mods for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V, which is one of the biggest reasons people play the game on PC. Not only does it suck for people who play it but it also sucks for people who make a living off of producing YouTube videos centered around Grand Theft Auto V mods. It also means that massive mods, such as one that would've put Grand Theft Auto IV's Liberty City map into Grand Theft Auto V via a seperate island, have been completely scrapped.

Of course, Take-Two's actions don't necessarily speak for Rockstar Games so the massive game developer has issued a public statement regarding the matter. The team at Rockstar spoke out and confirmed this is not an attack on single player mods but it was done due to the use of malicious GTA Online mods that have come from OpenIV.

"Take-Two's actions were not specifically targeting single player mods. Unfortunately OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody. We are working to figure out how we can continue to support the creative community without negatively impacting our players."

We're not exactly sure what mods or issues Rockstar Games is referring to but PCGamer is actively pushing for more information from Rockstar Games.
